Case study
SDi control system in tunnels
Tunnel lighting
Project data
Name
SDi control system in tunnels
Place
A10 Katschberg tunnel, Austria
Purpose
Transition from High-Pressure Sodium (HPS) to LED lighting without replacing the existing cables
Year of completion
2021
Object
In typical setups, the need for additional cabling for dimming control posed a logistical and financial challenge, especially in environments like tunnels, where cable installation can be complex and costly. This is why it was very important to find a solution with the existing installation and to still have a high-quality control system.

CHALLENGES
BUCK’s innovative approach led to the development of the SDi (StepDim Interface) control system. By utilising the existing 3-phase system, they repurposed two phases for power— sufficient for LED luminaires due to their lower power consumption compared to HPS—and the third phase as a control signal. This eliminated the need for new control cabling.
SOLUTIONS
The SDi system transferred control signals via 230V, rather than direct current (DC) signals, resulting in a highly stable and reliable system. This setup allowed for up to 10 dimming levels, providing flexibility and precision in lighting control. Furthermore, the system was designed to handle an unlimited number of luminaires on one circuit, enhancing scalability. The SDi control system was specifically created for tunnel renovations, where conventional lighting like HPS is already in place, rather than for new tunnels with no existing lighting infrastructure.
For more detailed information about the SDi system, see our TUNNEL LIGHTING CONTROL brochure.

BUCK’s SDi system not only met the project’s specific requirements but also set a new standard in tunnel lighting control. By innovatively utilising existing infrastructure, they provided a cost-effective, reliable solution that simplified installation and offered enhanced control capabilities. This case highlights the importance of adaptable technology in meeting modern infrastructure needs.
