Object

Designing an architectural lighting system for The Palace of Science meant addressing several critical aspects:

Architectural integrity – the lighting had to emphasise the monumental character of the building without disrupting its architectural logic.

Variety of functions – from lecture halls and laboratories, through corridors and offices, to exhibition and representative areas, each space required a dedicated lighting approach.

Flexibility and adaptability – the building is used for scientific sessions, public events, and exhibitions, demanding a lighting system that can adjust to changing programs.

Energy efficiency – with the building’s intensive use, long-term energy savings and reduced maintenance costs were key requirements.

CHALLENGES

In collaboration with the architects, BUCK developed a comprehensive architectural lighting concept based on a carefully selected combination of luminaires, tailored to the character of each space.

SOLUTIONS

Circular luminaires in both surface-mounted and pendant versions were introduced in representative spaces and communication zones. With their clear geometry, they provide a strong visual identity and diffuse, pleasant illumination that enhances the monumentality of the interiors (LUNA CDP /S and LUNA CDP /C).

Surface-mounted and pendant linear LED luminaires of various profiles were applied in corridors and transitional spaces, where continuous light lines follow architectural flows and emphasize spatial clarity (SLIM LINE TLS /S).

Track lighting systems with spotlights were used in lecture halls and exhibition areas, enabling adaptable lighting scenarios. The mobility of the spotlights makes it possible to focus light on speakers, exhibits, or specific architectural elements.

Discreet general lighting was applied to provide uniform and visually comfortable illumination without distraction (CENT, PRIMA S CDP).

To ensure that these different lighting layers work seamlessly together and adapt to changing requirements, the project also integrated a HELVAR lighting management system. This intelligent control solution allows for dynamic adjustment of brightness and scene settings, optimising both user comfort and energy performance throughout the building.

This combination ensured a balance between representation and functionality: monumental public spaces gained a ceremonial character, work areas offer clarity and comfort, while lecture halls and exhibitions benefit from dynamic and adjustable lighting.

The final lighting installation for the Palace of Science successfully achieved all project objectives:

  • The interior spaces gained a distinct visual identity, shaped by clean geometric forms.
  • Optimal working and exhibition conditions were created, from workspaces to public halls.
  • Energy-efficient lighting was achieved, along with significantly reduced maintenance costs.

The solution remains flexible and adaptable, capable of supporting diverse programs and evolving needs of the institution.

Benefits for the investor

The Palace of Science project demonstrates how carefully designed lighting for cultural and educational buildings can elevate a space dedicated to science and innovation. Through this project, BUCK once again proved its expertise in delivering sustainable architectural lighting solutions that merge technology, design, and energy efficiency into a coherent whole. Supported by the HELVAR lighting management system, the project ensures intelligent control and adaptability for years to come. Today, the Palace of Science stands as an inspiring example of how light can be both functional and aspirational – in the service of knowledge and culture.
